The coffee table is the center of the living room: it holds tea and coffee, snacks for guests and everyday items. Here are the rules designers use to pick the right one.
1. Length: about two-thirds of the sofa
A coffee table that is roughly two-thirds the length of your sofa looks balanced. For a 220 cm sofa, look for a table around 120–150 cm long, or a round table of 80–90 cm.
2. Height: close to the seat
The table top should be about the same height as the sofa seat, or a few centimeters lower, usually 40–48 cm.
3. Leave room to walk
Keep about 40–45 cm between the sofa and the table. It is close enough to reach a cup and far enough to walk past comfortably.
4. Round or rectangular?
- Round tables suit small rooms and homes with children because they have no sharp corners. See the ROTUN N.
- Rectangular tables suit long sofas and L-shaped seating.
- Nesting sets give you two tables in one; pull them apart when guests visit. See the NESTA N.
5. Do you need storage?
Lift-top tables raise the top to a comfortable height for eating or working on a laptop and hide clutter inside. See the LIFTA N and ELEVA N.
6. Complete the setting with a side table
A small side table next to the sofa or bed holds a lamp or a cup within reach. See the DUETO N and browse side tables.
